# Best Social Media Platform for Business: How to Choose

> There is no single best platform. Pick the one where your buyers already spend time and whose main format you can produce every week. For consumer brands that is usually Instagram or Facebook, for B2B LinkedIn, for products that need explaining YouTube. Start with one main channel and at most one secondary channel.

Ask ten small business owners how they chose their social channels and most will say some version of "that's where I am personally". It is not a terrible method if you happen to look like your customers. Usually you don't.

You get a better answer from three questions, asked in order: where your buyers spend time, what you can realistically produce each week, and what you want people to do after they see a post.

## Where the audience is: usage data

For the United States, the most widely used reference is the Pew Research Center's survey of 5,022 adults, published in November 2025. It asks people whether they ever use each platform, which makes it a measure of reach rather than daily attention.

**Share of US adults who say they ever use each platform, 2025**

| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 84 % |
| Facebook | 71 % |
| Instagram | 50 % |
| TikTok | 37 % |
| WhatsApp | 32 % |

If you sell into Germany or the wider EU, the picture shifts. Germany's ARD/ZDF media study for 2026 measures weekly use among people aged 14 and over. According to published reports on the study, Instagram sits at 40 percent, Facebook at 28, TikTok at 18 and LinkedIn at 8. Facebook and TikTok both lost ground compared with the year before, while Instagram held steady.

Age matters more than any platform average. Among German 14- to 29-year-olds, 91 percent use social media at least weekly, according to that study, against 22 percent of people aged 70 and over. So a home-care provider trying to reach the adult children of elderly clients faces a very different map than a barber in a college town whose customers are mostly students.

## What each platform demands from you

Reach is half the decision. The other half is the format each network favours, because that format sets your weekly workload. Instagram runs on good photos and short video. TikTok is almost entirely video. LinkedIn still works with plain text and PDF carousels. YouTube takes the most effort per piece, but a solid how-to video can keep pulling in viewers for years, which no feed post will do.

**Platforms compared for a small business**

| | Instagram | LinkedIn | Facebook | TikTok | YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strongest for | consumers, local | B2B, hiring | local, older buyers | under-30s, hiring | explaining, search |
| Core format | Reels, carousels | text, documents | photos, Groups | video | long video |
| Works without video | partly | yes | yes | no | no |
| Content found months later | no | no | no | partly | yes |
| Production effort | medium | low | low | high | high |

The effort ratings are my own judgement for a team without a video person. If you already film, TikTok and Reels get easier, since one clip can serve both.

## Engagement is not the same as reach

Engagement benchmarks get quoted a lot. Rival IQ's 2025 benchmark report found median engagement per post, measured against follower count, of 1.73 percent on TikTok, 0.36 percent on Instagram and 0.046 percent on Facebook. On X it was 0.015 percent. That looks like a clear win for TikTok.

Read the fine print, though. The sample is 2,100 fairly large brands with between 25,000 and one million Facebook fans. Your 600-follower account is a different animal. And high engagement is worthless if none of the people engaging can buy from you. How the metric is calculated, and which formula suits which question, is explained in the guide on [how to calculate engagement rate](https://social-media-konzepte.de/en/metrics-and-ads/how-to-calculate-engagement-rate/).

## Three questions that settle it

1. **Who exactly should take action?** Shoppers, job applicants, procurement managers, family members of patients? Note their rough age and compare with the data above.
2. **What can you produce every single week?** If nobody wants to be on camera, TikTok and YouTube are effectively out.
3. **What should happen next?** Hiring often points to Instagram or TikTok, business buyers to LinkedIn, walk-in customers to Instagram plus a maintained Google Business Profile.

Typical combinations that come out of those questions:

| Business | Main channel | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| Café, salon, boutique | Instagram | Facebook or TikTok |
| Accounting firm, IT services | LinkedIn | Instagram for hiring |
| Trades business hiring apprentices | Instagram | TikTok |
| Maker of technical products | YouTube | LinkedIn |
| Physiotherapy, home care | Facebook | Instagram |

Treat these as starting points. If your regulars already run an active Facebook Group, that beats any survey.

## Company page or personal profile?

LinkedIn raises a question Instagram mostly doesn't: should the company post, or should a person? Company pages belong to the business and stay when people leave. Personal profiles of founders tend to feel more human, and plenty of people find it easier to comment under a person's post than under a logo.

Most small B2B firms end up doing both. The page carries job ads and announcements; two or three people from the team share and add their own angle. Once employees speak for the company in public, you need some ground rules, which are covered in the article on a [social media policy for employees](https://social-media-konzepte.de/en/strategy/social-media-policy-employees/).

## X, Threads, Pinterest, WhatsApp

X has lost relevance for most small businesses, and its 0.015 percent median engagement in the Rival IQ data was the lowest of the networks studied. Threads is worth watching but hard to justify as a main channel today.

Pinterest is underrated. Smaller, yes, but it behaves more like a search engine for ideas: interiors, recipes, weddings, DIY. If you sell in those categories, test it. WhatsApp Channels work as a direct line to existing customers but will not bring you new ones.

## Signs you picked the wrong one

Three months of regular posting is a fair test. After that, a few warning signs are hard to argue with. Reach stays almost entirely within your existing followers even after you tried the formats the platform favours. The comments come from colleagues, relatives and other agencies, never from potential buyers or applicants. Or the team simply can't keep up because the format is too heavy.

Switching then is not a failure. It is the decision your plan should have scheduled from the start.

## Locking in the choice

Write the decision into your [social media strategy](https://social-media-konzepte.de/en/strategy/social-media-strategy-template/) and give it 13 weeks before judging. Running several channels in parallel quickly turns into exports and copy-paste between five dashboards; at that point it is worth pulling the numbers into one place, for instance with a dedicated [data analytics setup](https://onlinebuilders.biz/solutions/data-analytics).

Next step: find your business type in the table, answer the three questions honestly, and cross off every video platform if question two came back without video. The full survey tables are in the [Pew Research Center report](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2025/11/20/americans-social-media-use-2025).

## FAQ

### Is Facebook still worth it for small businesses?

Often yes, especially for local services with an older customer base, and because of Groups and Events. Pew's 2025 survey still has 71 percent of US adults using it. For reaching people under 30 it should not be your only channel.

### Is TikTok good for a small business?

It can be, if someone on the team is comfortable on camera and can post short videos every week. Without regular video it does not work. Hiring and youth-oriented products are the strongest use cases.

### Should I claim my business name on every platform?

Yes, it takes ten minutes per network. A parked profile that points to your main channel is better than someone else using your name.

### How many platforms can a small business handle?

One main channel and one secondary channel. More only works when at least one person spends a large share of their week on social media.
